YamOGA Zen-Inspired Meditation practice imagery

Meditation at YamOGA is not simply about relaxing. It is a practice you can learn, develop, and gradually bring into everyday life.

Our approach is primarily inspired by Zen meditation, beginning with simple awareness of the breath and progressively developing concentration, observation, and stillness.

The practice is guided by YamOGA founder Yama Lam, who has completed the Certificate in Buddhist Studies at the Institute of Buddhist Studies (IBS). Her ongoing Buddhist study and personal meditation practice inform the way meditation is shared at YamOGA: thoughtfully, progressively, and in a way that remains approachable for modern life.

For beginners, we begin with something you already carry everywhere: your breath.

You may first learn to observe the natural rhythm and sensations of breathing without trying to change them. From there, we introduce breath counting, helping to develop concentration and the ability to gently return when the mind wanders.

As your practice develops, we gradually move beyond counting into open observation, learning to notice bodily sensations, thoughts, emotions, and experiences as they arise without immediately holding onto them or pushing them away.

For those ready to deepen their practice, sessions may gradually progress toward Vipassanā-inspired insight meditation, cultivating greater awareness of moment-to-moment experience.

Your practice develops with you.

  1. Observe the breath

Begin by noticing the natural movement and sensations of breathing.

  2. Count the breath

Develop concentration and learn to gently return when the mind wanders.

  3. Sit with awareness

Gradually let go of counting and become more comfortable with stillness and observation.

  4. Observe what arises

Notice bodily sensations, thoughts, emotions, and patterns without immediately reacting to them.

  5. Deepen into insight

When appropriate, explore Vipassanā-inspired practice and a deeper observation of moment-to-moment experience.

You can expect

More than finding calm.

Calm may arise through meditation, but calm is not the destination.

The deeper practice is learning to see more clearly.

With continued practice, we learn to recognize when the mind wanders, observe our habitual reactions, return to the present, and create more space between what we experience and how we respond.

Over time, meditation becomes more than something we practise while sitting.

It becomes a way of meeting life.

Begin where you are.

You do not need to know how to meditate. You do not need to stop your thoughts. You do not need to sit perfectly.

We begin with one breath.
